- The programme is taught by experienced dentists, senior dental surgery assistants (DSA) or qualified medical service/ dental professionals
- Besides lectures, there are 29 hours’ clinical training and 10 hours’ clinical practice with emphasis of both theory and practice

Fundamentals of Dental Surgery Assisting
A. Lecture (6 sessions, total 18 hours)
- Basic dental theory and career prospect
- Facility, equipment and operation in dental clinics
- Infection control and sterilization procedures
- Handling skills of emergency cases
- Customer service and communication skills
- Clinical technique training
B. Clinical practice in dental clinic (total 6 hours)
- Charting
- Basic dental instrument
- Forceps
- X-ray and OPG
- Clinic examination
C. Dental Health Education Project (total 6 hours)
Advanced Skills of Dental Surgery Assisting
A. Lecture (8 sessions, total 24 hours)
- Dental theory: tooth anatomy, periodontal charting
- Endodontics and impression
- Occupatinonal safety and health
- Digital scanning and dental materials
- Skills: complaint handling, appointment, inventory control, patient record keeping
- Introduction to orthodontics
- Basic pharmacology, anesthesia, pain control, sedation and special needs dentistry
- Introduction to oral & maxillofacial surgery, oral pathology and implant
B. Clinical practical in a dental clinic (max. 23 students per group) (9 sessions per group, total 26 hours)
- Scaling and rubber dam
- Amalgam and loading matrix band, mixing IRM
- Composite, revision of amalgam and LA
- Minor oral surgery and scalpel, elevator
- Root canal treatment
- Dental (I) Impression
- Dental (II) Crown & bridge
- X-ray film holder, digital x-ray and oral hygiene instructions
- Clinical examination
C. Clinical training (2 sessions, total 10 hours)
- Daily operation in dental clinics or mobile dental vans
Admission Requirements
- Level 2 in five HKDSE subjects including Chinese Language and English Language or equivalent; or
- Satisfactory completion of Diploma Yi Jin; or
- Aged 21 or above at the commencement of the programme plus minimum 1-year health related working experience; or
- Other equivalent qualifications to be assessed by LIFE.
